Meanwhile, Matabeleland South Province has donated RTGS $10 000 cash, clothing and groceries to cyclone victims.

Speaking last week during a handover of the donated items to Swift Company in Gwanda for transportation to Manicaland Province, Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs Minister Cde Abednico Ncube said three districts in the province had submitted their contributions so far and the remaining four were still to submit.

He said the donations had been contributed by individuals from the province, churches, companies and members of the business community. “As Matabeleland South Province we organised people in all our seven districts to make contributions towards assisting victims of Cyclone Idai in Manicaland Province. We have received donations from three districts namely Gwanda, Umzingwane and Insiza. The remaining four districts Bulilima, Beitbridge, Mangwe and Matobo are yet to submit their donations.

“We received RTGS $10 000 cash from How Mine Company and 400 by 10kg bags of mealie-meal from PPC Company. We also received groceries which comprise soap, cooking oil, water, sugar and clothing from various stakeholders. This is the second batch of donations that is being sent as some goods were sent to the victims last week,” Cde Ncube said.

He appealed to people to continue making contributions as affected families were still in need of assistance.

“I would like to thank the people of Matabeleland South who have made contributions towards assisting Cyclone Idai victims. This is a sign that we are united as a country. This disaster might have affected Manicaland Province but it’s the duty of all of us to assist as Manicaland is in Zimbabwe and we are all fellow citizens. For those who haven’t contributed I urge them to do something to help our fellow brothers and sisters in need,” Cde Ncube said. — @ DubeMatutu A 73-YEAR-OLD man from Matobo allegedly fatally struck his neighbour with a knobkerrie on the head while trying to stop him from assaulting his wife.

Elijah Moyo and Walter Mhlanga (45) both of Silozwe area were working in the fields when Moyo started accusing Mhlanga of abusing his cattle, resulting in a misunderstanding.

Mhlanga followed Moyo to his homestead and started assaulting Moyo’s wife with a knobkerrie. In a bid to defend his wife, Moyo wrestled the knobkerrie out of Mhlanga’s hands and then struck him with it.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Chief Inspector Philisani Ndebele said Mhlanga died on Tuesday last week while admitted to the United Bulawayo Hospitals.

“I can confirm that we recorded a murder incident which occurred in Silozwe area in Matobo. Elijah Moyo and Walter Mhlanga were working in Moyo’s fields on 26 March at around 10AM when they had a misunderstanding. Moyo accused Mhlanga of hitting his cattle which were pulling the plough too hard but Mhlanga dismissed the accusations,” he said.

“This didn’t go down well with Moyo and he left the fields and went home. Mhlanga, who was also disgruntled, followed Moyo armed with a knobkerrie. Moyo locked himself in one of his huts THE Ministry of Health and Child Care says there is an outbreak of diarrhoea in parts of Chimanimani and Chipinge which were hit by Tropical Cyclone Idai with more than 50 cases having been recorded.

Speaking in a telephone interview, the Director of Epidemiology and Disease Control in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Dr Portia Manangazira, said a number of Cyclone Idai victims had been treated for diarrhoea in the last week.

“We have noted a number of diarrhoea cases among the victims of the cyclone. We are expecting that it could be because of living conditions and lack of proper ablution facilities.

“I am unable to give exact figures at the moment but we have attended to over 50 people who were treated for diarrhoea. Under such circumstances this should be expected as the body has a way of responding to such conditions,” she said.

Dr Manangazira said the Ministry was working to ensure that there were proper sanitation facilities and clean water in the area.

“We are working as a ministry with a number of our partners, all tasked to ensure that there are proper sanitation facilities in Cyclone Idai affected areas,” she said.

Dr Manangazira said the Ministry had also recorded cases of pneumonia and other respiratory infections which she attributed to exposure to weather conditions. — @andile_tshuma
