A heart makeover

Psalms 51: 10 “Create in me a pure heart, o God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

As I was going about my business in a shopping centre, I passed by a beauty shop that was offering complete makeovers for both men and women. The banner outside the establishment advertised full makeovers for a fee, where they would transform everything about an individual, from their hair, clothes and general grooming and produce a better version of the person involved. There were images of people who had undergone these makeovers, and I must say the transformations were really impressive.

We live in a society that is intrinsically focused on outward appearance. The media teaches us that our sense of worth is dependent on our physical appearance. We spend a lot of money on enhancing our looks because we are somehow encouraged to believe that beauty lies in things like skin, clothes, hair trends and the complements we get from people and social media further intensifies this theory. As I thought about the makeover business later, I thought to myself, what if we were to have heart and soul makeovers instead? Yes outward beauty is good but if you have no character, no integrity, if you are not beautiful inside, then is it meaningful in any way?

What we need is deep rooted transformation, real change in our inner being, our hearts and souls. To look deep into ourselves, challenge ourselves to be better, while accepting ourselves as flawed beings who are nothing without the love and grace of Christ, and to love ourselves and others the way He has loved us. The same way the beauty makeover reveals what you could potentially look like, imagine if you had a heart makeover and became the best person you can possibly be? The character and nature of Christ is what we should strive to model. Imagine transforming yourself into being a more loving and wholesome person; joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, gentle, faithful and practicing selfcontrol? Now that’s a makeover worth investing in!
