NEW PRODUCE MARKET POSES HEALTH THREAT
A HEALTH time bomb is ticking at the newly- opened old Sanyati bus terminus farm produce market in Rimuka as traders are resisting council efforts to disinfect the area, a full council meeting heard.
Acting director of Housing and Community Services Aaron Masembura said as council, they were facing logistical challenges leading to dereliction of the stipulated once-a-week disinfection exercise.
“We have challenges with the old Sanyati rank farm produce market in terms of disinfection. When we spray, traders must remove all their wares to pave way for us to carry out our routine exercise. We initially slated this for Thursdays each week, but we’re facing stiff resistance from merchants, in that respect.
“We eventually decided to move the market place disinfection exercise to Sunday when trading is supposed to be on hold. Nonetheless, traders still want to do business on that day. We think that issue should be resolved before it gets out of hand,” he said.
The district development coordinator (DDC), formerly known as DA, has to move in to stop the turbulence.
“Of course, weekly disinfection should be done to avoid infections and the spread of Covid-19. Council has engaged the DDC on a number of ways to overcome the challenge.
“We need proper management of the usually crowded marketplace,” he added.
He emphasised that weekly disinfection should be done as a matter of policy
However, people visiting the area are following Covid-19 regulations on avoiding infections and arresting the spread of the communicable disease. This is done with enforcement from municipal police, development committee and members of the ZRP.
“Traders themselves and customers are sanitized at every entry point. They’re encouraged to wear face masks and observe social distancing,” director Masembura informed the house.
“In our last meeting with the DDC, we agreed that the market place should be closed every Sunday and disinfection must be done weekly.
Contrary to the arrangement, it’s business as usual on any day of the week. It seems authorities have their hands tied on enforcing certain policy issues and regulations they formulate.
The old Sanyati rank next to Rimuka police station was opened at the instigation of the outbreak of Covid-19, to ease congestion on the other farm produce markets, Durawall and Jompani, both of which were attracting hordes of people, thereby posing a heightened risk of spreading the pandemic.

Marriage is sacred. Why is it now fashionable to date someone married? Marriage is for two serious grown up people of the opposite sex. It’s not a Micky Mouse game. It is the soul that makes families and nations. It is also the future because recent research from Tokyo shows that children from stable families do well in school and in their careers. Let’s all strive to protect the marriage vows for our happiness’ sake. — TAWANDA MHLANGA DANGAMVURA
