BOGUS COPS’ GANG ROBS MINER
A GANG of bogus police officers is on the run after robbing a miner of US$10 000 and nine grammes of gold at a farm in Goromonzi over the weekend.
In a statement, Mashonaland East Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza said 10 robbers approached a gold miner, Alexio Kambasha ( 32) at his home at Aylmesfiled Farm while posing as police officers looking to arrest illegal gold miners.
The robbers made off with nine grammes of gold, US$10 000 cash, airtime worth $3 000 and four cellphones, among other goods.
“The robbers pounced on four victims who were at the farm on Sunday, including one Alexio Kambasha, a gold ore miner who was robbed by these suspects posing as police offices.
“At around 9pm, the robbers knocked at Kambasha’s door while introducing themselves as CID officers for mines and upon opening the door, the victim was handcuffed.
“The suspects demanded a gun from Kambasha who said he did not own one.
“They then lifted the bed and took a safe containing nine grammes of gold, US$10 000 and a satchel containing airtime worth $3 000.
“They also searched other three victims and took four cellphones and took off with the loot.
“The total amount of goods stolen is yet to be ascertained and a report was made at Goromonzi Police Station who attended the scene.
“No arrests have been made as yet,” Insp Mwanza said.
He expressed worry over increasing cases of criminals impersonating police officers while conducting nefarious activities. Insp Mwanza urged the public not to entertain strangers.
Furthermore, police have appealed for information on the whereabouts of the 10 suspects and urged the public to report suspicious persons to the nearest police station.
