Maphosa optimistic for 2021
Sokyokushinkai gold medalist fighter Pumulani Maphosa is optimistic of good fortunes when Karate tournaments resume next year.
The karateka is aiming to put the Zimbabwean flag on the world map following the long break.
Maphosa’s desire to win has not been derailed by the break which saw karatekas spend almost this whole year without any competitive tournament.
Other sporting activities like football, cricket and boxing have already returned with strict adherence to Covid-19 regulations and guidelines whilst karate remains on the sidelines. Speaking to H-Metro he said:
“Like in the beginning it has been my desire to compete and win. I remain focused on that. Despite having 2020 marred with challenges, my main agenda in 2021 is to put the Zimbabwean flag on the world map.
“We have competed with one of the best martial arts personnel who came from esteemed countries in karate rankings before and as team Zimbabwe we have proved our mettle and challenged for honours.
“I will carry that spirit going in the future. “Through the ropes I have earned my stripes in Nepal and Swaziland. For my career it was a turning point that I always draw inspiration from as they are one of the major tournaments I have participated in.
“It can’t go unmentioned as it marks my presence in the karate circles”, said Maphosa.
He bemoans the effects of Covid-19 that have affected his whole carrier due to less training commitments in the absence of tournaments.
“The pandemic has affected my whole carrier and life style because I no longer train that hard and the absence of tournaments the whole year trends in the negative side for me.
“It takes away silently the extra zeal and passion to be at the best always.
