BANKET HOUSE RAZED DOWN BY FIRE

- Paul Pindani recently in Banket

PROPERTY worth thousands of dollars was destroyed in an inferno after a fire gutted a Banket house on December, 26.

The house in the low density suburbs of Banket, on stand number 182 Saxbee Drive, belongs to United Kingdom based Chenjerai De Souza.

Eye witnesses said they started seeing smoke coming out through the roof before flames engulfed the deserted place.

Some neighbours had to smash the car window of a vehicle in the garage to move it away from the inferno.

The tile-roofed house was razed down and well-wishers failed to extinguish the raging fire.

“We tried our level best to put out the fire but we failed because it was ar aging fire ,” said one neighbour.

Bank et has no fire tender and relies on Chinhoyi which is about 20 kilometres away.

It is not yet clear what caused the fire but a neigh bo ur Derrick Wilkinson suspects it could have been caused by an electrical fault.

The total value of the property that was destroyed could not be given but some neighbours suspect property worth tens of thousands of dollars was destroyed.

“The fire might have been caused by an electrical fault,” said Wilkinson.

Efforts to get a comment from the caretaker of the house Aneas Chigwedere were fruitless as he was out of town when H-Metro visited the scene while his mobile phone was unreachable.

Meanwhile another house in Banket high density suburb of Kuwadzana township also caught fire on the same day though the fire was quickly extinguished with slight damage to the roof.
