Lunga for Sundowns

- Sports Reporter

Zimbabwe international defender Divine Lunga is poised for a move to South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns from Golden Arrows this transfer window.

According to KickOff, the deal was initiated last year and Arrows are already looking for possible replacements with negotiations at an advanced stage.

A source close to the player told H-Metro yesterday that the deal was initiated by former Downs coach Pitso Mosimane who is now at Al Ahly in Egypt.

And Steve Kompela, a member of the Pretoria side’s technical team and coached Lunga before, has pursued the deal as they work on reinforcing their squad.

“It’s true, he (Divine) could have joined Sundowns in previous window because coach Pitso (Mosimane) wanted him but the deal didn’t sail through for some reasons.

“Coach Kompela is also an admirer having coached him before at Arrows. So discussions are at an advanced stage and it’s mostly likey it’s happening this transfer window,” revealed the source.

Lunga, for now, could not be drawn into commenting on the deal.

Sundowns are working on widening their options on the left flank of their defence having qualified for the CAF Champions League and the pressure of domestic competition.

The Zimbabwean attracted interest after his performance at 2019 Africa Cup of Nations finals, ‘pocketing’ Egypt’s Mohamed Salah in the tournament opener.

The former Chicken Inn player has been a key member of the Zimbabwe national team.

The 25-year-old is praised for his effectiveness in both defence and attack down the flank.

He has been a regular at Arrows, making 30 appearances in his first season, then 27 in his second, and has so far made eight appearances in the current campaign.
