Hunt’s slowest start

Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt has laboured on to his slowest start in a new job after a dozen games in a fresh season in the PSL, but will be encouraged that another sluggish start in a new job at SuperSport United ended with Matsatsantsa as champions in 2008.

Hunt has guided Chiefs to just 16 points from the 36 that have been available since the beginning of the season after winning four and losing as many games as he has drawn.

Three of the four wins have come in the last three with Chiefs rising to familiar territory in the top half, though they still have a negative goal difference.

In all the four previous jobs he has had from the start of the season in top-flight football, Hunt has had a better start at the 12-games mark, including at clubs that had far fewer resources such as Black Leopards and Moroka Swallows.

At Leopards it was his first new job with a new club at the beginning of a season.

He had come up from the first division with Seven Stars in the 1997/98 season before taking over at Hellenic midway through the following campaign.

That one-season joyride with Lidoda Duvha in the 2001/02 season saw Hunt’s team on 22 points from the opening dozen games, the foundation of that run laid on winning the first three matches in a row of their first season in top-flight football.

He was the PSL Coach of the Season that year as Leopards finished in position eight — one place above Amakhosi.

The next job that he had from the beginning of the season was at Moroka Swallows (2002/03).

From the opening 12 league games he had garnered 18 points with the Dube Birds, going on to finish in fourth place. Chiefs finished sixth. He stayed on for five seasons at Swallows.

Next up was SuperSport United at the beginning of the 2007/08 season where he had a slow start but still had 18 points from the first 12 league games.

At the end of that season he won his maiden league title courtesy of a low points tally of 54 while Chiefs were down in sixth position.

Hunt was with Matsatsantsa for six years.

Then at the start of his new job at Bidvest Wits in the 2013/14 season he had 22 points from the opening 12 games with the Clever Boys.

A third-place finish meant it was the first time that Hunt had ended his first season in a new job behind Chiefs — who were second that year.

What will now spur Hunt on is the experience of being the longest-serving coach in the PSL era and winning all trophies in domestic football, including four league titles. — Kick Off.
