I MISS TUKU BIRTHDAY CALLS: SELMOR

-

SELMOR says her late father and music icon Oliver ‘Tuku’ Mtukudzi respected their birthdays despite staying apart, writes Trust Khosa.

The award-winning diva opened up as the world commemorated the late crooner’s second anniversary last Saturday.

Tuku died on January 2019 aged 66 and was declared national hero.

And every year on January 23, the world marks Tuku’s death with pride reflecting on the path he travelled and the influence he had in society.

His daughter, Selmor who is following in her dad’s footsteps, said Tuku was a loving father who cared for the fruits if his loins.

“I miss his phone calls on our birthdays; every year, he would call us on our birthdays, he always used to call and sing for us,” she said.

Selmor who said is still mourning the death of her father has vowed to keep the Tuku legacy alive.

“To ensure that I keep his legacy alive, I have been doing a number of performances and recording music.

“I just recorded one of my father’s oldest songs called Ngwarai as a way of remembering him, all these are efforts to make sure that we keep his legacy going,” she said.

She however conceded that life was indeed brutal without a father.

“Life without a father is difficult, especially in my case since he was very famous. The healing process is taking long as people still console us and I don’t know when the world will heal,” she said.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic which saw most of artistes losing their sources of income in 2020, Selmor was humbled by the support she got from corporates.

“The support has been really amazing, we have managed this past year with the support we got from a number of corporates like Old Mutual, ZTN, Nyaradzo among others,” said Selmor who also served Impala Car Rental with distinction as its brand ambassador for a year.

Like any other artiste operating in this current environment, Selmor said she was not spared by the effect of Covid-19.

“I have failed to market my album Dehwe Renzou and reach out to many people due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” she said as she prayed for the good times ahead.

Selmor is one of the consistent divas who did very well last year by engaging fans through online gigs.
