YOUNG CHOREOGRAPHER DREAMS BIG
ON home soil, many players in the creative sector are yet to embrace choreography while it is a prerequisite abroad.
A few who have taken it seriously have scaled greater heights as they deliver refreshing stuff which captures the feelings, mood and general flow of the play.
However, the trend seems to be changing with top artistes comprising Jah Prayzah, Ammara Brown, Alick Macheso, Freeman, XQ among others, embracing the changes.
One such choreographer who is destined for the stars is 22-year-old Nissi Nyamayaro who continues to win the hearts of many as a choreographer and dancer.
H-Metro Assistant News Editor (Entertainment) Trust Khosa (TK) had a chat with the young choreographer (NN) who is doing wonders.
The Harare-born versatile entertainer opened up on his journey as a young choreographer and his ambitions. Read on…
TK: Give us your brief profile yute?
NN: My name is Nissi Nyamayaro, spelt as Nixxi in our circles.
I was born on the 28th of March 1998 in Harare.
For my primary education, I attended Sunningdale Primary School and Hallingbury Primary in Harare.
Afterwards, I went to Marlborough High, Chemhanza Mission and Pace College.
Currently, I am a doing choreography and many in my circles refer to me as “The Codebreaker”.
I don’t doubt my worth as a person who is multi-talented and passionate in dancing, football and computer sciences.
I am also a God-fearing, humble and charming guy who doubles as an IT consultant.
TK: Where did you get “The Codebreaker” moniker? NN: I was given this name when I was still at school studying HEXCO in Computers.
I was known as one of the best students in computers and a guru in the subject of hacking, cracking and decoding passwords. So that’s where the name was derived from.
TK: Which dances do you specialise in?
NN: I specialise in coupedecale, rhumba, contemporary, hip hop, ball room, amapiano and Afro dances.
TK: Any memorable shows held so far?
NN: First, was when I shared the stage with Fally Ipupa. I was performing with Diamond Musica that day at HICC. Second, was when we shared the stage with the Nigerian Mr Eazi at Ammartia Ignite Concert where I was performing with Cole Nation Group.
I have also performed twice with Ammara Brown with the assistance of fellow choreographer John Cole, among other dancers.
Lastly, my memorable performance was when we performed at the Harare Colour Sprint at Borrowdale Racecourse, it was a trio and unrehearsed performance with my friend Yashie and the late Scara The Drummer (Delroy).
TK: Your role model please?
NN: The one and only Diamond Platnumz.
TK: Which companies or corporates have you worked with?
NN: I have worked with the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ), NetOne, Steward Bank, Datsun Go, Nissan, Paint Express, Econet, the list is endless.
TK: How many weddings have you performed at so far? NN: I have done more than 200 weddings up to date.
The best wedding I have done was my parents’ wedding, it was awesome leading mom and dad on the dance floor with my sister’s assistance.
TK: Which top acts have endorsed your works?
NN: To date, I can safely say I have been given thumbs up by the likes of Diamond Platnumz, Serge Beynaud, Fally Ipupa, Kamo Mphela, Qounfuzed, Winky D and King 98.
TK: Which international choreographers would you like to meet?
NN: I wish to meet US choreographer Jaquel Knight and South Africa Lee-che Janecke.
As for the choreographers that inspire me, the list is made up of Jaquel Knight, Courtney Paul, John Cole, Yaps Jolito and Lee-che Janecke.
TK: Your marital status?
NN: I’m single.
TK: How do you handle women?
NN: I don’t hang around a venue after a show to avoid temptation, I head home straight away.
TK: Which local artistes have you worked with?
NN: Locally, I have worked with Winky D on the video Ka song ke Jecha, Freeman and Alick Macheso on Ngaibake video, Mathias Mhere (Adam naEve video and performances, Sharon Manatsa (Tinofamba Munyasha video) and Allan Chimbetu (Ndisina Mari video).
I have also performed with Mai TT on several occasions. With Ammara Brown, it was on two occasions as well as will John Cole and Lee Mc Honey (skoro skoro) e.t.c
I have also managed to have a Dance and Fitness programme on ZBC with my co-dancer / friend Yashie.
The programme airs Saturday mornings between 6 to 7am. With my friend, we also teach people dance moves and dance for fitness during our dance class and we recruit dancers.
TK: Your word of advice to fellow choreographers?
NN: Provide people with good quality content and services every time, people will always remember you for that.
