EVANS FOCUSED

- Shelly Guni

LIGHTWEIGHT boxing champion Evans “99” Husayihwevhu remains focused despite all the negativity caused by the Covid19 induced lockdown.

Zimbabwe is currently under Level Four lockdown following the continuous surge in Covid-19 cases, a development which led to the suspension of all sporting activities again.

Husayiwevhu (26) last fought in May 2019 when he won the WABA title which he was set to defend in November.

“I’m optimistic that all things will get back to normal soon all

I have to do is to be patient and remain focused,” he told H-Metro Sport.

However, the Charles Manyuchi Boxing Academy captain says he is itching to get back to action.

“I’m so ready fo action right now. It’s been long since we tasted

the ring.

“I’m are training every day hoping for us that when the sport finally resumes, we wont be found wanting.

“We might as well get International matches so we are always preparing and thanks to my managers and coaches who always push us to continue working hard so that we stay in shape.”

Usaiwevhu is pleading with the response authorities to at least allow them to have a few competitions but under strict conditions so that they can be able to shake off some ring rust.

“I’m appealing to the authorities to at least allow our promoters to host some events.

“We will follow the guidelines they give us because its almost a year now without action and for a sports person it doesn’t look right not to have match fitness for that long,” he says

The star shared some of the effects of Covid-19 in his career.

“It has affected us a lot, from last year we didn’t have any tournaments and some of us boxing is our source of income meaning no action no money. It has also affected me physically because now almost everyone has ring rust. Currently like I said we are only doing individual trainings without fights.”

While the lockdown brought in a number of negativity, many like Usaiwevhu had some positives to take from it in the form of lessons.

He says the lockdown taught him to: “not to depend on one source of income. And also that we must always be disciplined in and outside the ring.”

Standing at an eight fights all wins, five of which are by knockouts with no defeat, Usaiwevhu went on to urge other boxers not to lose sight.

“My advice to all other boxers is that, lets stay sage and fit. Be focused, don’t lose hope and be patient. Time will come and we will continue with our profession” he says
