Rains damage Kadoma infrastructure
HEAVY rains falling in the City of Kadoma have left a trail of damage, with a lot of infrastructure in the city affected.
Buildings were damaged and the newly tarred Rimuka-Westview Road was not spared as it was left with potholes.
Potholes along Bonda Road, whose rehabilitation was completed last October, have left questioning the quality of latest rehabilitation works on roads in the sprawling Kadoma suburbs.
Rimuka-West View Road was resurfaced in 2018 and council earned kudos for a job well done, but the current heavy rains have washed away about five hundred metres of the bitumen stretch.
“We had become comfortable using this route. Other roads that lead to town from Rimuka are heavily potholed. Now the rains have taken all that joy from us. This road will badly damage our vehicles,” said Nicky Dhliwayo, a motorist from Rimuka.
City Engineering Head Engineer Blessing Musasira said they were looking at the contracts signed between council and the contractor.
“I was not in charge at the time this road was surfaced.
Exodus company won the tender. I am not privy to the method statement, but have requested for it. My observation is master drainages are blocked or overwhelmed. Pixie Combi and New West View are supposed to drain away from this area.”
Eng Musasira said they had invited Exodus so that they address the issue together.
“Normally, there is a defects maintenance period (DMP) ranging from one to five years. Accordingly, we will look at the terms of this contract.”
Added Eng Musasira: “Drainage is there to protect the road. At times we concentrate on the main road leaving out the drainage aspect. Kadoma’s drainage is very poor.
“Datex Construction, which completed resurfacing Bonda Road last year, agreed to a yearlong DMP. The contractor on the busy road in Waverley signed a 12 month DMP and will attend to it after the rain season.”
Besides the damage to the roads, residents are faced with the problem of rain water mixed with sewage flooding their homes; storm water drainage has failed them.
Add to that, toilet blockages are turning Kadoma into a sewage city.
