What Ole told his Man Utd stars

-

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER and Scott McTominay were in no mood for mercy as Manchester United thrashed Southampton 9-0 at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

The United boss was urging his men to score more with the score at 6-0 with eight minutes left on the clock.

There were seven different scorers, eight if you count Jan Bendarek’s own-goal, on a stunning night in the north west.

But with the game well and truly won and just eight minutes of normal time left, the Norwegian showed his ruthless streak.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, Bednarek (og), Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial and McTominay had already scored, but their manager wanted more.

He was heard shouting: “Get more goals. Ten minutes.”

And sure enough he got his wish after Bednarek’s controversial red card which Saints will appeal.

Bruno Fernandes scored the resulting penalty before Martial scored again on 90 minutes to make it 8-0.

But perhaps the most telling show of United’s mentality was McTominay’s reaction when Dan James made it nine in the third minute of stoppage time.

Video footage showed the Scot shouting and pointing for his team-mate to grab the ball from the net so they could go again and score another.

United ended up equalling THREE alltime Premier League goalscoring records on the night.

It is only the second time a team has had seven different scorers in a Premier League match. The last was Chelsea against Aston Villa in December 2012.

It is also only the third time ever a side has won a game by nine goals.

Once was United back in 1995, beating Ipswich 9-0.

And of course poor Southampton were on the end of a 9-0 slaughtering against Leicester in 2019.

And thanks to a 3-2 win at St Mary’s earlier this season, United equalled the record number goals scored by a team against an opponent in a Premier League season, 12.

No wonder Solskjaer was beaming at full time.

Speaking after the game, he said: “We shared the goals between the players.

“When the game starts like it does it’s always good if you can get the first goal as we have seen so many examples of 10 men closing up shop and getting a draw.

“We’ve been waiting for them to show the magic and it was a night for them to go and enjoy it. We’ve not had many times where we could just enjoy the second half.

“You get lots of confidence from a performance like this, scoring goals is always good for a team.” — Sun.
