Chinhoyi Municipality clears dumpsites
CHINHOYI Municipality has embarked on massive dumpsite clearing across the town as it battles solid waste management.
In an interview, the Municipality’s Director of Health, William Mayabo, said council had embarked on massive dump clearance following a collection schedule already in place.
“We have embarked on massive dumpsite clearance across the town and we are urging residents to stop dumping waste at undesignated sites, they must bin waste and follow the collection schedule we have furnished them.”
Mayabo welcomed the gesture taken by Environmental Management Agency (EMA), who added a tractor to their waste-collection fleet.
EMA Provincial Education and Publicity Officer Munyaradzi Nhariswa said the partnership they had entered with the Municipality was part of their social support to sustainable waste management practices.
“We are going a step further to train township and ward-based litter monitors and community based organisations all in an effort to enhance solid waste management.
“Our hope is through these partnerships, the ability and capacity of the local authority moving forward will be enhanced,” he said.
Nhariswa said the mushrooming of illegal dumps clearly indicate a mismatch between waste generation and management.
There is need to embrace an integrated waste management system that is sustainable, efficient and socially supported.
“We appeal to waste generators, particularly industrial and big corporates, to fully embrace the cradle to the grave principle, while at household level waste separation should be the norm, and we encourage residents to practice the 7 R system, which should be coupled with regular collection of non-biodegradable waste, while recycling waste should be directed to recycling enterprises,” said Nhariswa.
