CHINHOYI-BASED musician-cum-businessman, Minister Something Kubvunya, says music runs in his blood.
The 34-year-old gospel singer told H-Metro that as a child, he was taught about God, and it appealed to him, hence he devoted his life to save the Lord God through his music.
He owns various grocery shops around Chinhoyi under Messina Investments brand.
Minister Kabvunya said his late father used to sing with the late John Chibadura but later went solo and formed his own band called Nhonga Unende Express which produced two albums. Minister Kubvunya has however, opted to give hope and faith to the weary during such trying times.
“I still remember vividly well that I used to sing at school assembly point when I was doing my primary in Guruve.
“That was in 1999, when I was in grade four. I later did my high school at Negomo Secondary and still continued with my music.
“I got employed at Chidamoyo Christian Hospital in Hurungwe in 2005 and became serious with music in 2009,” said Minister Kubvunya.
His music breakthrough came in 2007 when he entered the Chibuku Road to Fame competition that was held at Karoi’s As You Like It Nite Club.
“The Lord blessed me when I won the competition with my band called Voices of Hope Crew.
“So, I managed to record my first album titled ‘Kuzvipira’ which was recorded at Metro Studios. The album had eight tracks,” he said.
Minister Kubvunya said some of the songs such as ‘Kuzvipira’ and ‘Dendemare’ were well received by his multitude of fans across the country.
In 2013, he did a demo tape at Diamond Studios, but failed to record it due to financial constraints. He purchased his first studio kits when he was employed in his father-in-law’s shop.
“I then recorded my second album titled Ngoni DzaJehova in 2015. I did some collaborations with Mathias Mhere,” said Minister
Kubvunya.
He added: “I took a break in 2016, and later came back rejuvenated and recorded a 12 track album, which I had three collaborations with Kudzi Nyakudya, Andy Muridzo and Mhere.”
“Tsaona Mugwagwa” one of his videos is being aired on ZTV. I never stopped recording as music is a passion. In 2021, I once again recorded a six track album titled ‘Rudo Rwamwari’. So, I am ever busy and still in the studio recording an album due to be released next year. This time I did a song with Obert Chari who sang ‘Mebo’ and Mark Ngwazi.”
He urged fellow musicians to diversify, especially during such trying times of Covid19, saying his businesses compliments his musical career.
“I run quite some grocery shops here in Chinhoyi and Harare under Messina Investments. I will continue to preach and spread the gospel through my music, as I was called to serve God,” he said.
Currently, he established a studio called Sky Studios, where he helps up-coming artistes. He however bemoaned the negative impacts of Covid-19 which has had a major impact on music industry as musicians have not been able to hold live musical shows for over one-and-half years as the Government tries to thwart the rising cases.
