Lady Chevrons ready for Ireland

- Richard Zimunya

ZIMBABWE women’s national cricket team coach Adam Chifo says the Ireland tour, which starts today at Harare Sports Club will give his side much-needed game time ahead of the World Cup Qualifiers in November.

Lady Chevrons are scheduled to play their Ireland counterparts in four One Day Internationals (ODIs), with the other three scheduled for October 7, 9 and 11.

In an interview with

H-Metro Sport, Chifo said:

“The Ireland tour will definitely give us the much needed game time opportunity as we prepare for the qualifiers, we have just come from a T20 tournament and this is a platform that we will use to switch to ODI cricket.

“We have played a lot of cricket in the last month starting with Thailand, which had seven matches and then the T20 tournament which had seven matches too, so that is a lot of game time adding with the 4 ODIs against Ireland it will surely be enough preparation.”

The Lady Chevrons are coming from a recent triumph in Botswana where they won the ICC Women T20 World Cup Africa Qualifiers tournament to book a place in the Women’s T20 World Cup tournament next year.

“The victory in Botswana did not only provide us with tickets to the next T20 global qualifiers and the next world cup qualifiers but it was also a major confidence booster for the ladies as we go on to face tougher teams in the ODI world cup qualifiers,” said Chifo.

Zimbabwe are set to host the World Cup qualifiers tournament in November.

Chifo revealed that he is going to use the coming games to scout new players.

“There is definitely need for us to widen our selection pool as this will not only provide competition for places but it will also provide us with alternatives when hit by injuries.

“We have a few players still recovering from injuries and some are still nursing some niggles so a bigger squad will give us leverage in terms of selection and replacements,” he said.
