12 YEAR-OLD SCHOOLBOY DROWNS IN WARREN PARK

- Norman Muvavarirwa

A 12-YEAR-OLD BOY drowned in a man-made river in Warren Park D on Friday afternoon while swimming with his other four friends.

This comes barely a week after another 12-year-old boy drowned in a shallow pit in Warren Park on Tuesday

The boy, identified as Tinotenda Chatira, was a Grade Six pupil at Warren Park 4 Primary School. His guardian, Mbuya Fuka, confirmed the incident.

“I am still in shock that Tinotenda is no more. I had just had lunch with my other grandchildren when I received the bad news. I could not believe it since we were together some few minutes before,” she said.

The deceased’s father, Garikai Chatira, who is based in South Africa, said his life will never be the same.

“My life will never be the same without you, son. I woke up thinking about how you love horror movies. I had no idea I would lose you today.”

Reports indicate that Tinotenda was allegedly pushed by one of his friends.

An eyewitness, Simba Mutero, who first attended the scene with other members of the community, said: “Tino drowned in the river as he was swimming with his friends.

“It is suspected that he was pushed into the deep end by one of his mates and he failed to contain the pressure of the water. One of them ran to inform the elders whilst the other three ran away.”

He said during the search, Tino’ s body was found under the water.

“We tried to resuscitate him by applying some first aid basics but it was too late. He was then rushed to Suburban Clinic and he was pronounced dead on arrival,” he added.

The body was retrieved by members of the community. Warren Park residents are not happy with the state of the river.

“This used to be just a small stream. We are surprised that now it has been developed into a river.

“Someone, who has ventured into a horticultural project beneath that Blue Shop, wants to irrigate his crops using the river,” said a Warren Park D resident.
