PSL SUSPENDED

- Sports Reporter

THE domestic Premiership has been suspended indefinitely after the league’s leadership halted it yesterday to try and find answers to the lawlessness that has become part of the show.

This means that, until the league’s leaders are certain they have put the right structures to deal with the violence, which have been rocking the programme, of late, the championship will remain on hold.

There were expectations yesterday that something dramatic will be announced, by the leaders, amid reports that main sponsors, Delta Corporation, were concerned by the growing lawlessness at the matches.

There was violence at Barbourfields on Sunday with match officials being forced to abandon the Battle of Zimbabwe showdown between Highlanders and Dynamos.

The match is supposed to be the flagship battle of the league but, of late, it has become a showground for violence.

Some hooligans even attempted to uproot the goalposts, after Highlanders took the lead in time added on while other reports say the match officials were attacked as they fled for the safety of the dressing rooms.

The PSL, in a statement, said what was happening in the domestic Premiership was unacceptable.

“The PSL has suspended all Castle Lager Premier Soccer League matches with immediate effect until further notice following incidents of violence and hooliganism that continue to take place in our football,” read the statement.

“The PSL strongly condemns such acts as they can only serve to tarnish the beautiful game of football.

“We are currently engaging all key stakeholders to find lasting solutions to these challenges. We have scheduled a meeting with Security Officials including the Zimbabwe Republic Police, Club Security Officers and Marshals as well as stadium owners on Friday 20 May 2022.”

The league said they had requested Bosso and Dynamos to furnish “us with reports detailing the events that transpired at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday 15 May 2022.

“We will take disciplinary action after receiving the said reports.

“We take this opportunity to apologise to all football loving fans, our sponsors and stakeholders. We hope to address these challenges before resuming football matches.”
