WHAT A FOOLISH RACIST
. . .white SA student urinates on black counterpart’s belongings
CAPE TOWN. - South Africa is undergoing another tough soul-searching exercise after a white Stellenbosch University student urinated on a black student’s books on Monday.
The video has gone viral in a country which has struggled with cases of racism. South African media personality, Unathi Nkayi, has said she has been enraged by the video. Many other personalities have spoken against the shameless act and demanded action.
Babalo Ndwayana, a first year law student, was the victim of this shameless act.
“The student affected is clearly still in shock after his very upsetting and painful ordeal,” said Stellenbosch University senior director of student affairs, Dr Choice Makhetha.
“He is still trying to process what happened and was offered counselling. He will be supported as and when required to ensure his academic progress is not affected by the incident.”
The South African Students Congress (Sasco) in the Western Cape says Ndwayana had asked to take a break from campus and his studies as he was traumatised by the incident.
Ndwayana laid three charges of racism, housebreaking and malicious damage to property against the student who urinated on his study desk. Footage of the student urinating has gone viral and there are calls for his expulsion.
Sasco WC convener Sifiso Zungu said: “Outside everything, he is just a young person, a first-year student, we deeply understand his shock.
“We are happy with how the university is responding, making sure he is getting attention and assistance . . . he wants to take a break and at least go home.
“We did try to communicate with the university, the response was positive. We are happy with everything.”
In the video, the white student is asked why he is urinating on another student’s books and he reportedly said “this is what we do to black students.”
Nkayi, the media personality, has slammed the incident as “institutionalised racism”.
She went on to say that the student was suspended but he should have been expelled.
The former Idols SA judge went on to express that she feels education was how the previous “dispensation crippled black people” and now it is being done within the institutions.
“INSTITUTIONALISED RACISM - UNIVERSITY of STELLENBOSCH - student urinating on a BLACK first year student’s bed, books and laptop and says it’s how they initiate the BLACK STUDENTS,” she wrote.
“This student has been suspended. He needs to be expelled, have criminal charges against him and be banned from ALL institutions of learning.
“EDUCATION is how the previous dispensation CRIPPLED us as black people and now their seeds are doing it within the institutions.”
The student behind the urinating incident issued an apology and he was suspended from the university.
“I just want to apologise in general for my behaviour, I know what I did was wrong, and I’m sorry,” he said. - Cape Argus/ENCA/TimesLive.
