Two nabbed for armed robbery
TWO men have appeared in court on charges of robbery and possession of an unlicenced firearm.
Malivin Mumvurutsi, 34, and John Mafigu, 32, were denied bail when they appeared before Harare magistrate Evelyn Mashavakure yesterday. They will be back in court today for their bail application.
The duo complained that they were severely assaulted by the police and the State said it will investigate the allegations.
Allegations are that last Saturday, police received information that the duo was committing armed robberies in and around Harare and managed to arrest Mumvurutsi in Whitecliff.
During the investigations, it is alleged that he told them that he and Mafigu had a firearm.
He further told the detectives that they used the pistol to commit several robberies.
The police Mafigu and recovered the pistol hidden under the mattress after searching the house.
Mumvurutsi was once convicted and spent time in jail, while Mafigu has pending cases.
It is also alleged that on December 20 last year, Mumvurutsi, Mafigu and other accomplices still at large hatched a plan to rob complainants.
They went to Greendale armed with machetes and confronted Dennis Masenhu and Cannan Ferenando who were manning a premise and ordered them to comply with their orders.
They ransacked the office and managed to open a safe and went away with US$20 500.
They robbed the complainants of their cellphones and sneakers, and left them tied with shoelaces.
Upon his arrest, Mumvurutsi was found with ZRP tracksuits, six shirts, four riot trousers, three belts, one jersey, two drab caps and one black pair combat shoes.
