ZIM U21 HOCKEY APPEALS FOR US13K SPONSORSHIP
THE Zimbabwe national Under21 men’s and women’s sides have stepped up preparations ahead of the 2023 Junior Africa Cup that will be held in Egypt next month.
As part of their preparations, both teams held exhibition matches last week at St John’s Educational Trust Astro Turf.
Hockey Association of Zimbabwe (HAZ) board member, Cliff Kaseke, said both teams are raring to go.
“They are well prepared and rearing to go. They held two exhibition matches, one for the ladies and one for men on Friday last week. The teams are practicing two or three times per week. They are also getting valuable game time during league matches during weekends,” said Kaseke.
Kaseke said despite preparations
going well, both teams are in need of sponsorship to enhance smooth travel arrangements.
“We need about US$13 500 for a provisional squad of 36 players.
“The players need everyone’s support to make this quest a reality. The turnout at last weekend’s exhibition matches was encouraging and we hope this converts into monetary support from sponsors.
“The hockey brand is on the up and we urge the corporate world, both large and small to come on board and use their collective power to drive the girls’ and boys’ dream of going to the Junior World Cup via the Africa Qualifiers in Egypt.”
The men’s team captain, Mutsawashe Kanyangarara, said they are doing their level best.
“It’s a lot of work, but we are training well, and we also hope to qualify for the World Cup. We are preparing so that everyone can see that we are doing what we can to make it. But we need funding for travel arrangements.”
Women’s team player, Tinodiwanashe Elijah, said they are raring to go.
“We are expecting to do well in Egypt. It takes a lot of work, but as long as the basics are done, it’s possible. We need support financially since most of us are from high school, although our parents are supporting us. While moral support is also critical, we need sponsorship,” she said.
