Musarurwa shines at Arnold Classic
AARON Musarurwa is excited after scooping a silver medal on his debut at the Arnold Classic Africa at Ruimsig Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa, at the weekend.
The Arnold Sports Festival, named after legendary former American professional body builder Arnold Schwarzenegger, saw over 1000 athletes, from numerous sporting codes that include bodybuilding, karate and powerlifting, battling for silverware.
Musarurwa came second in the men’s senior bodybuilding up to 85 kgs, sandwiched between Mozambican hulks - Alexandre Francisco Moamba and Abraham Mawutor Kwame Torkornoo.
“I’m so excited and overwhelmed by winning a medal especially that it’s my first time taking part at this biggest tournament in Africa
“It was a tough competition, there were a lot of big athletes from as far as Angola, Ghana and Mozambique but I’m happy that I managed to pull through.
“I came to the competition to compete in the junior category but the rules were changed at the last minute and I had to compete in the seniors, up to 85 kgs, but that did not deter me as I did all I can and managed to win a silver medal which I think is a good start for my international career.”
He added:
“I’m going to work extra hard so that when I come back next year I will fight for gold and the pro card.
“I think it’s a big start that at 23 years I’m able to win a medal at this big event and it shows that my future is bright and what I now need is more support from the corporate world.
“I’m very grateful for the support I’m always getting from Trysupps Zimbabwe and our federation have been with me from the start and never lost faith in me which I think is a massive thing.”
Team Manager Givemore Marume said he was proud of the 23-year-old.
“We are so proud of Aaron, I think his performance was good, we also expected him to push further but winning a medal in his first time is amazing”
In the Women Bikini Fitness category, Zimbabwe reigning champion Nomathamsanqa Phiri came seventh out of over 16 athletes from around Africa.
