Row over beer leads to attempted murder

- Mathew Masinge

A HATCLIFFE Extension man, known for soliciting beer at local pubs, is facing an attempted murder charge after attacking another patron who refused him a free sip.

Myton Mutsengi (40) appeared at the Harare magistrate court on Monday where his bail was opposed before magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa.

He was remanded in custody to December 13 for bail application.

Prosecuting, Anesu Chirenje said that at around 2pm on December 2, the complainant, Lancy Murombo, was drinking in the company of a female friend, Mary Kabasa, when Mutsengi asked to join them.

Mutsengi was told by Murombo that there was no free alcohol for him because of how he behaves after having a few drinks.

This did not go down well with Mutsengi, who then insulted Murombo, picked up a stone and attacked his dog.

Murombo managed to calm himself and restrained his dog from attacking Mutsengi, who eventually walked away.

After a few minutes, Mutsengi returned holding a gas tank and charged at Murombo, accusing him of taking his wallet, which had an undisclosed amount of money.

In a fit of rage, Mutsengi picked up a stone and struck Murombo on the head who slumped to the ground.

Mutsengi continued assaulting Murombo.

It took the intervention of Mutsengi’s friend, Permission Muratu, to stop the assault.

Murombo, who was bleeding profusely, was given first aid and urged to make a police report.

While on his way to the police, Murombo collapsed and was spotted by a woman who was working on her field who informed the police.

Police found Murombo lying unconscious, in a pool of blood, and took him to Parirenyatwa Hospital where he is admitted in the intensive care unit.
