GOVT IMPROVES ACCESS TO JUSTICE FOR GBV SURVIVORS
THE Government has reiterated its commitment to ending gender-based violence (GBV) and improving access to justice for survivors.
The country has seen an increase in GBV cases this year, with 18 907 cases of domestic violence recorded from January to October compared to compared to 17 244 during the same period last year.
There is also an increase in the number of men reporting abuse cases, with 2 463 reports received in the first nine months of this year compared to 1 782 last year.
The Government has established specialised courts and support services for victims of GBV and has criminalised child marriages to curb violence against young girls.
There are also plans to push for further legislative reforms to fight violence against women and girls, including criminalising sexual activity with a child under the age of 18.
In a media briefing in solidarity with the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Ziyambi Ziyambi, said the Government’s efforts are towards creating a society where women and girls can live free from the fear of violence and exploitation.
“It has been our duty as Government to ensure that women are treated equally and have the same opportunities as men in all aspects of life.
“In the same vein, we have also made efforts to address critical issues such as child marriages, gender-based violence, and access to justice for all.
“Through various legislative reforms and awareness campaigns, we have successfully reduced the prevalence of child marriages and improved the legal framework to ensure the safety and well-being of women and girls.
“Additionally, we have established specialised courts and support services to provide victims of gender-based violence with the necessary resources and assistance to seek justice,” said Minister Ziyambi.
He said by addressing the root causes of GBV and implementing strong legal measures, the Government was working towards a future where every individual can thrive and enjoy their fundamental rights.
He said the Government continues to transform the way the justice delivery systems treat cases that include rape, child sexual exploitation, and other forms of violence against women and girls while promoting gender equality, social justice and human rights.
