Back to school delight for underprivileged students

NORTON Ward 7 councillor, Tinashe Machemedze, has donated stationery, uniforms and sanitary wear to about 200 underprivileged students.

Many of the beneficiaries do not afford basic necessities such as school fees, uniforms and stationery.

Machemedze, who has promised to improve the lives of young people in the area, hopes that providing these students with the tools to succeed in school will help keep them away from drugs and other negative influences.

“I am so elated that I have managed to fulfil my promise to the young learners from Ward 7. When I was voted in, I promised to improve the lives of residents and this is a small step in that direction.

“These young learners who are receiving books, uniforms and sanitary wear are the future leaders and the best we can do for them is to give them education so that they achieve their dreams and stay away from drugs,” said Machemedze.

He said it wasn’t a one-off event, but he will ensure that he chips in whenever he can until the students complete their schooling.

“I grew up in Norton and I love Norton residents, and will always try to make their lives better using the little resources I can pool,” he said.

He said drug abuse has become a cancer that needs to be fought from all angles by everyone.

“By keeping these young people in classrooms, we ensure that they not only learn to pass and further their studies, but also to learn about the dangers of taking drugs and abusing alcohol which will have negative ramifications on their health in the future.”
