SOUTH African DJ Black Coffee’s rise into a giant of the world has been reflected by the massive global media interest provoked by his dice with death when he was injured in severe turbulence during a flight to Argentina on Sunday.
The 47-year-old Grammy Award winning entertainer, whose real name is Nkosinathi Maphumulo, is said to be recovering at a clinic in Montevideo where he has been joined by his family. His private plane, which suffered severe turbulence, was forced to make an emergency landing in Montevideo while he was travelling from the Brazilian city of Florianopolis to the Argentine city of Mar Del Plata where he was set for a performance at Club Mute on Sunday.
Media organisations, from around the world, feasted on the news in what was an acknowledgement of the massive profile which DJ Black Coffee has built for himself in a transformation which has made him a true global A-lister celebrity.
Prominent news organisations like USA Today, People, Daily Mail, Metro, Periodico Ibiza, Esquire Middle East and Billboard spread the news from the United States to the United Kingdom and from Canada to Canberra.
“It’s a measure of the global profile that he has created that he now generates such interest from around the world, in good and bad times, and this is massive,” said an entertainment analyst.
“For a boy from Durban, this is huge but DJ Black Coffee has worked hard to break down the barriers and winning the Grammy Award was a game changer.
“It shows how the world values him right now and it’s something that he deserves, which has come from hard work and refining his talent and taking on the world.”
A statement from Club Mute, which was first published by the Argentinian media, said:
“Dear Argentinian fans, Black Coffee regrets to inform you that as a result of severe air turbulence on his private plane from Florianopolis to Mar del Plata, he had to make an emergency landing at Montevideo Airport.
“He suffered severe blows to his body and at this moment he is at a clinic in the same city under observation.
“We regret to inform you that he will not be at the show today.”
Media in the South American country said the statement had been released before he went into surgery.
The DJ is said to be receiving the best possible medical attention and being supported by his team and relatives.
