Zim producer recounts UK experience

- Latwell Nyangu

ZIMBABWEAN video director and producer, Hastings ‘Mr Hasty’ Chiromo, has spoken about his experience filming a music video featuring South African gospel singer, Reverend Benjamin Dube, and Michael Mahendere in the UK.

Hastings has directed videos for Dorcas Moyo, Mathias Mhere, Leornard Zhakata, Purple Pride, Madam Boss, Mbeu, Eleana Makombe, Denise Moyo, Nicky Genius, Maskiri featuring Tererai and Naiza Boom, among others.

He said the project had given him a boost, exposed him to advanced filming equipment and gear, and enabled him to work with other nationalities, including British and Nigerians.

He added that while local projects run on relatively low budgets, Zimbabwean artists and event planners can now compete internationally thanks to “a level” of excellence in the entertainment industry.

The video was recorded during the Grateful Concert UK 2023, hosted by gospel artist Eleana Makombe, who is based in the UK.

“I went to the UK to produce a live video of a concert featuring Benjamin Dube, Michael Mahendere, Ellard and Sharon Sharai.

“I feel motivated to be part of such a big event and to be selected to be the main video director and producer in the UK has given me more confidence in my work.

“It made me feel special because such a selection was never easy. This project has widened my experience and it was an honour to lead a team which included Britons and Nigerians.

He compared local projects to European ones.

“The projects I have done locally run on lower budgets compared to this one. Everything you request will be supplied so there is excellence.

“I can say the concert was one of the most organised gigs I have ever recorded.

“I believe locals can compete because we have talent here. Me going to produce a video for a concert in the UK is evidence that locals are competent,” said Hastings.
