TUKU DOCUMENTARY ON THE CARDS
OLIVER “Tuku” Mtukudzi’s mentee, Innocent “Sarungano” Kufakunesu, is set to launch a documentary chronicling his life with the late music icon.
Dubbed ‘Sarungano Remembers Oliver Mtukudzi in the Streets’, the documentary will be available on Facebook and YouTube tomorrow at 7am.
Tuku died on January 23, 2019, aged 66.
Since his death, his life and the impressive body of art that he built are being celebrated.
And, Sarungano, one of Tuku’s finest products, has decided to come up with something unique.
Speaking through his manager, Eugine Museredza, Sarungano’s camp said:
“Tuku groomed Sarungano and a host of artists that passed through Pakare Paye.
“Tuku treated Sarungano differently because of his humility and intellect.
“As a way of remembering him, five years after his death, we have decided to come up with this documentary where Sarungano will be sharing some of the great moments with him.”
The manager added:
“Tuku remains a legend and failure to honour him will be a mockery to him.
“In our case, we are also taking the Tuku celebrations to Ireland where we are billed to perform at the Pillo Hotel in Ashbourne on Friday the 26th of January.
“Julian King and Progress Chipfumo are also part of the show,” he said.
Tuku family friend and music promoter, Canford Danga, confirmed the Ireland tour.
“We have decided to invite Sarungano after he showcased himself well on his maiden performance in Europe last year.
“His music had a positive impact on Zimbabweans in Ireland as well as the Irish community where he performed in their local pubs after the main event — Day of the African Child.
“The young man is a joy to work with as we share the same vision of providing meaningful platforms for creating networks within communities and beyond, encouraging participation through engaging in diverse and enriching music performances whilst impacting personal and professional growth,” he said.
Danga hailed Tuku for ushering Sarungano into the music world.
“Sarungano was groomed by the legendary musician Oliver ‘Tuku’ Mtukudzi, therefore, making it easier for people to connect to his genre of music.
“Inspired by this great mentor, Sarungano’s humility has also been instrumental in him winning the hearts of many Irish and musical-loving communities.”
Danga has promoted Ngoni Kambarani, Quonfuzed, Chipfumo and Julian King with more Zimbabwean artists in his plans.
