The eventful month of February is now upon us and love is in the air.
As usual, many street corners will soon be peppered with roses and awesome outfits to mark Valentine’s Day on February 14.
This Valentine’s Day is a bit special since it’s a leap year when men are supposed to receive gifts from ladies.
Boutiques, florists and street vendors along with the country’s top eateries, hotels and watering holes are likely to make a killing this month.
On the showbiz landscape, creatives will be looking to cash in on this special day with more belated parties set to mark the greater part of February.
As a precursor to February 14, below are some of the talking points on the showbiz scene for this week.
G SEH CALAZ TROLLS
The Zim dancehall stalwart was trolled on social media after he revealed his political allegiance.
Since late last year and last month, businessman Wicknell Chivayo has splashed over US$5 million on expensive wheels for celebrities, including his own fleet.
Jah Prayzah, Suluman Chimbetu, DJ Fantan and Sandra Ndebele are some of the household names cruising in expensive cars gifted to them by Chivayo.
Chivayo revealed that he was rewarding these artists for their outstanding performances during the Zanu-PF rallies held last year ahead of elections.
From the blue, Seh Calaz shared a post revealing he was born a ruling party member, attracting the attention of social media trolls.
To be precise, social media trolls had a field day questioning Calaz’s motive and timing of the post.
Some of his followers urged him to work hard and buy his own car while others felt he was begging for new wheels from Chivayo.
Neutrals saw nothing wrong with revealing his political allegiance. However, the timing and motive remain a subject of debate.
Knowing Calaz as a ghetto youth from Mbare, Yours Truly will leave the ball in the Mabhanditi’s court to shed more light.
He has been roasted before, mocked and undressed and we all know his strength when handling the pressure of social media.
We can only say Calaz has the right to post what he wants on his social media pages, and his team of handlers know his dream.
G ENTER PASSION
It’s hard to ignore Passion Java, who never runs short of new antics.
On Wednesday, he silenced his doubting Thomases by filling the City Sports Centre to the rafters.
Earlier in the day, three businessmen, Philip Chiyangwa, Scott Sakupwanya and Economic Empowerment Group president, Mike Chimombe, shared a video endorsing Passion Java’s Night of Wonders Service as a “must-attend” event.
Superstar Jah Prayzah also performed at the event as promised.
But Passion being Passion, he never runs out of new antics, especially when making controversial prophecies.
Whether some of his acts amount to blasphemy or not, we will leave it to God.
As for those who believe in Passion and his antics, let it be since only God can judge him.
Love him or hate him; there is no doubt that Passion is a crowd puller and entertainer.
We need such characters in life to help us stem the tide.
G LET’S HAVE WIDOWS IN MIND
Away from the Passion Java mid-week service, let’s not forget widows as we mark the month of love.
On Wednesday, System Tazvida’s widow, Babra Mabuyaye, confessed that she still misses her husband.
She said it has been a long, lonely 25 years without a Valentine’s Day gift, which she last received when System Tazvida was still alive. The singer died on February 4, 1999, aged 31.
Babra is not alone in this predicament, as Valentine’s Day probably opens wounds of other widows of departed music legends such as Mai Dembo and Daisy Mtukudzi.
The only love and flowers we can give them is to support them in whatever they are doing to sustain their families.
G MAMPARA OF THE WEEK
The crown of shame does not have takers for this week, but we can only crown newsmakers of the week, Seh Calaz and Passion. It would be unfair to crown them otherwise.
However, what we learnt during the week is that Zimbabwe will never run short of attention-seekers. Happy reading!!!
