DIE-HARD LIVERPOOL FAN BATTLING FOR HIS LIFE

. . . He was stabbed by a Chelsea fan

- Zvikomborero Parafini

A DIE-HARD Liverpool fan was left battling for his life after being stabbed by a Chelsea supporter bitter that his team had lost their English Premiership clash.

The man is still in intensive care.

The suspected attacker, identified as Malvin Noah (18), appeared in court yesterday facing an attempted murder charge.

He was not asked to plead.

According to reports, the two men and other patrons were watching the league match at Specimen Shops in Glen Norah when Liverpool beat Chelsea 4-1.

After the match, Noah then allegedly stabbed the complainant, only identified as Paul.

Asked to explain what transpired on the night in question by magistrate Donald Ndirowei, Noah denied stabbing Paul.

“What happened was that we were watching soccer in a bar and as we were leaving, Paul started provoking me saying Chelsea had been beaten as I was wearing a Chelsea T-shirt.

“I tried to leave, but he continued provoking me and I was infuriated, but I didn’t respond then he started assaulting me.

“I tried to fight back, but was restrained by people I was with, then he ran away. I chased after him into a maize field where he fell and injured himself. I never stabbed him,” said Noah.

Prosecutor Anesu Chirenje opposed bail arguing that the complainant is still in hospital and that Noah didn’t give police his full address. Noah responded by saying he stays in Glen View 6 new stands, but they don’t have addresses yet.

In his bail ruling, magistrate Ndirowei said: “This court finds that no compelling reasons have been given by the State warranting the accused’s pre-trial detention.

“He gave an explanation why his house isn’t numbered because he stays at new stands and he’s very unlikely to abscond.”

He was released on US$40 bail.
