PSL MOURN ZVOBGO
THE Premier Soccer League have described Victor Zvobgo, one of their founding fathers, as a visionary man who is a hero of football in this country.
Zvobgo, who was the inaugural vice-chairman of the PSL, passed away at a Harare hospital on Friday after battling against a kidney ailment for some time.
He was a retired Group Captain with the Air Force of Zimbabwe.
“He was a visionary man, he saw the value in having a Premier League together with his colleagues like the late Morrison Sifelani and Chris Sibanda.
“They laid the foundation for what we have today as the PSL and we will forever be indebted to them.
“They created something which has provided a club which had reached the final of the CAF Champions League, the semi-final of the same tournament and dozens of players who have taken their talents outside the country.
“As the PSL we join the Zvobgo family, the entire football family and our country in general in mourning this brilliant son of our game.”
Jere visited Manyame Airbase yesterday where he delivered the PSL condolence message to some of Zvobgo’s former workmates.
Meanwhile, the Zvobgo family have released the funeral programme and he will be buried in Mhondoro Ngezi today at 2pm.
His body was taken from the funeral parlour yesterday and lay in state at his home at number 17697, New Cranborne, in Harare.
After laying the foundation of the PSL, Zvobgo left for the United Kingdom, where he worked for years before returning home in 2005.
“He had been unwell since September last year and it got worse in recent days,” said a family representative.
“Zvobgo passed away at St Anne’s Hospital in Harare and as a family we are in grief.
“Many who know the history of football in this country will remember that Zvobgo played a critical role in the formation of the Premier Soccer League in 1992, together with the likes of (Morrison) Sifelani and (Chris) Sibanda.”
