REGGAE COMMUNITY PAYS TRIBUTE TO PETER MORGAN
THE Zimbabwean reggae community has joined the world in mourning Morgan Heritage Family’s lead singer, Peter, who died on Sunday.
The Grammy Award winner, who succumbed to a stroke aged 46, served the US-based Jamaican reggae outfit with distinction.
Following his death, Zimbabwe music promoters, radio presenters and events managers, who dealt with the group, expressed their condolences.
Proma Events director, Blessing “Messina-Harare” Jeke, who was the group’s agent for Southern Africa, said:
“He was a fine gentleman that I worked with for years since I was running their affairs in Africa.
“I am the one who brokered the deal which saw the group performing in Zimbabwe before the Covid-19-induced lockdown.
“I am always in touch with the family and I toured several African countries with them.”
Fellow music promoter DJ Nosh, who hosted the group in Harare in 2016 along with Tich Mharadze under the now-defunct 2 Kings Entertainment stable, said:
“I was always in touch with these guys and there were plans to bring the group for his year’s edition of the Kadoma show.
“Messina linked us up with the family when they first visited Zimbabwe and afterwards we established direct contacts.
“Peter, like his siblings, was a professional guy and we will miss him.”
ZBC radio and television presenter, Terrence Mapurirsana, who had an opportunity to interview Peter, shared his grief on Facebook:
“It was a great opportunity to meet and interview the lead vocalist of the Grammy award-winning reggae band Morgan Heritage, Peter Morgan, when he came to Zimbabwe and played for the very first time at the HICC which was of course filled to capacity.”
Content creator Plot Mhako, who had an opportunity to interview him, said:
“I am deeply saddened by the news of the death of Peetah from Morgan Heritage. My sincere condolences to the Morgan family.
“Exactly last year, I had an interview with him and his brother Mojo on earGroundAFRICA.
“Just a day ago I shared a snippet from the interview. May his soul rest in peace,” posted Mhako on his social media handles.
Reggae fanatic Taonga “TK” Mafundikwa, who has strong links with the Mogan Herirate Family, added:
“The world has lost an iconic figure who was blessed with one of the best reggae voices ever.
“This has come as a huge shock especially considering that Peter was still that young. “Rest easy Peetah.”
Reggae artist Emmanuel “Mannex” Motsi, said:
“Peter is an inspiration musically worldwide and his style and presence onstage is something I will miss.”
Peter sang along with his siblings Una, Gramps, Nakhamyah Morgan, and Memmalatel “Mr Mojo” Morgan.
