What we did for Mzala is very good H-METRO

THE collective efforts made by various organisations and individuals to renovate former ZBC presenter John “Mzala” Phiri’s house in Glen View makes good reading.

Mzala has been unwell for some time with many of his peers fearing for the worst.

He urgently needed help to foot his medical bills since he has been struggling to make ends meet.

His house was in a sorry state but his prayers were answered when Good Samaritans offered to renovate it.

Star FM presenter Tilder Moyo, who worked with the veteran presenter at ZBC, mobilised various organisations and individuals to come to his rescue.

In the true spirit of Ubuntu, showbiz gurus led by dub poet Albert Nyathi, Aaron Chiundura Moyo and the Charambas visited Mzala last weekend and cheered him up.

The love Mzala received last weekend is what we expect to be given to our legends.

In life, we all go through such phases and Mzala still has the potential to bounce back.

Sickness and poverty are part of life.

In his case, Mzala did not choose to be in his situation since many of his peers are also struggling to bring food on the table.

Mzala, who lit our television sets back in the day, left footprints to be cherished for years.

He remains one of the icons who deserve to be honoured while he is still alive.

The swift reaction by various organisations and individuals to assist Mzala is what we expect from fellow Zimbabweans.

People have a tendency of showering legends with touching eulogies when they die.

Our legends deserve their flowers while they are still alive.

In Mzala’s case, we have seen people showing him genuine love, which should be extended to others.

The cheer he got from his colleagues is enough to inspire him to bounce back.

Mzala deserves this kind of love considering his contribution in broadcasting.

Former television presenters of Mzala’s calibre should be fully utilised in grooming others.

Mzala still has a lot to offer if we support him.

The help he got is enough to rejuvenate his spirit so that he continues to change many lives.

The same love he got should also be extended to other presenters who are struggling to make ends meet.

In most cases fame and fortune don’t match.

On that note, we appeal to former television and radio personalities who have fallen on hard times to open upon and get help.

As Zimbabweans we should never leave our legends, be it in arts or sport, to suffer because they would have hit tough times.

We must always find ways to help them because they entertained us in one way or the other.

We showed we are capable of doing this when we united to help musician Paradzai Mesi when he went through a rough patch in his life.

Businessman Mudiwa Hood led the way and now Mesi has a place he calls home and is in a good space.
