MACHESO DESERVES HIS SPECIAL GIFT H-METRO

-

SUPERSTAR Alick Macheso is on top of the world after he received a 2022 US$140 000 Mercedes Benz GLE 400d from businessman Wicknell Chivayo.

There is consensus the iconic singer deserved the gift.

It’s a well-deserved prize for his immense contribution to the local showbiz landscape.

And, 26 years after he left the Khiama Boys, Macheso has been ruling the roost.

He was the heartbeat of Khiama Boys and his departure, in a way, signalled the start of this super group’s fall from grace.

It’s easy to make one hit song but it’s very hard to keep churning hit songs for more than two decades, something which Macheso has been doing.

The reality is that Macheso is struggling to match the standards he set when he released Shedia but that is expected in the tough world of entertainment.

What isn’t in dispute is that Macheso will give us other gems in the future because he is a tried-andtested artist.

He is also a natural musician, he doesn’t need to push very hard to produce a hit and, as they say in sport, form is temporary but class is permanent.

No wonder why no one questions it when we say Macheso is the King of Sungura.

It has not been an easy time for sungura given that the hip hop artists have been producing some very good hits.

But, thanks to Macheso, sungura remains a big part of our music and he deserves a lot of credit for that.

A songwriter par excellence, talented dancer, mentor and philanthropist, Macheso remains in a league of his own.

Many people had been wondering when Chivayo was going to finally reward him.

On Friday, Chivayo delivered when he gifted Macheso with his huge present last Friday.

He joins fellow recipients like Jah Prayzah, Suluman Chimbetu, Sandra Ndebele, DJ Fantan, Seh Calaz, Chief Hwenje, Mathias Mhere among others.

By honouring Macheso while he is still alive, Chivayo was spot on.

In Zimbabwe, we tend to honour legends when they are gone.

For a change, Chivayo has shown us how it should be done.

He has taught us to honour our living legends when they can still celebrate receiving their honours.

History will record that there was Macheso who once shook this country with his numerous hit songs.

It will also record that there were some people like Chivayo who were there to celebrate Macheso’s greatness.

We can’t talk of Zimbabwean music without mentioning Macheso.

There will always be a section of our population which will criticise such gifts and we can only say they are entitled to their opinion.

But the reality is that Chivayo could have chosen to spend all his money at exotic holiday destinations but chose to empower people like Macheso because he rightly felt that they need to be celebrated.

Macheso is not only a musician in this country.

He is a legend and legends should be honoured.

Hopefully, one day someone will honour Sunday Chidzambwa for everything he did to develop our football.
