COUNCIL PLUMBERS BORROW PICKS, SHOVELS TO FIX LEAK

- Paul Pindani in CHINHOYI

MUNICIPALITY of Chinhoyi plumbers had to borrow picks and shovels to repair a water pipe burst in the Hunyani section of the town on Tuesday.

The municipality plumbers arrived without picks and shovels and had to borrow from some residents.

It could not be established if they had forgotten their tools of the trade at their base or the equipment was being used elsewhere by other council workers.

No comment could be obtained from Council spokesperson, Tichaona Mlauzi , as his mobile phone was not reachable.

However, the local residents were not amused. “Council has never had residents at heart. This shows that they don’t care about the welfare of their workers when they are on a tour of duty,” said Chinhoyi resident, Bigboy Munyoro.

Chinhoyi Resident’s Trust Secretary, Peter Liwanda, said:

“I think what it means is that Council is getting its priorities wrong.

“It doesn’t necessarily means they can’t afford to buy those things but it means that their priorities are far away from the priorities of the residents.

“If they had the residents at heart, they would have prioritised buying those tools of trade.

“They don’t want to address the challenges facing residents timeously.”

He added:

“If the engineer, Simon Marara, knows that the workers do not have these tools, he should make sure that such tools are availed to the department.

“This shows that there is no monitoring and supervision.”

Chairman of Combined Chinhoyi Residents Association ( CCRA), Tendai Musonza, said:

“You can’t expect much from them (Council), they want to think big when they can’t deliver on small things.

“It’s a shame.”
