LSZ president Wellington Magaya profile
COUNCILLOR Wellington Magaya was born 34 years ago and is a holder of a Bachelor of Laws Honours (LLB) Degree and Master of Business Administration Degree both from the University of Zimbabwe. He is currently studying for an LLM in Construction Law and Arbitration with Robert Gordon University.
Following graduation in 2008, he immediately joined Coghlan, Welsh & Guest as an intern and rose to become an associate in November the same year.
Initially seconded to the criminal law section of the firm, the new Law Society of Zimbabwe president moved to the civil litigation division before he was admitted to the Coghlan, Welsh & Guest Partnership in June 2015.
Wellington was first elected as a Law Society of Zimbabwe councillor in December 2015 before being re-elected in 2018 for a second term prior to his elevation to the position of LSZ president following last year’s annual general meeting that brought to an end former president Thandaza Masiye-Moyo’s term of office.
Blessed with a deep understanding of business, Magaya has a strong passion for commercial legal work, in particular his skill and experience in commercial dispute resolution, transactional work, construction law and employment and arbitration law makes him a valued member of the legal profession generally.
He has extensive experience in employmentrelated advisory issues as well as dispute resolution, for which he has appeared before several tribunals in Zimbabwe. He has advised several local and international corporates.
He serves in the discipline and ethics committee, the finance and administration committee of the Law Society of Zimbabwe and will now serve as an ex-officio member of other committees by virtue of being president. Magaya played a key role in the drafting of the Legal Practitioners Code of Conduct.
The discipline and ethics committee is responsible for enforcing ethical standards in the profession and investigating complaints against legal practitioners.
