Biomedicine student sends SOS

- BY STAFF REPORTER

BIOMEDICINE student and researcher Rutendo Kahari (20) is appealing for assistance to pursue a biomedical degree at Baylor University in the United States.

Speaking to Alpha Media Holdings chairperson Trevor Ncube on the platform In Conversation with Trevor, Kahari said: “The current research that is going on in the US at Baylor University is somehow affiliated with the tropical and infectious diseases that affect Africa. I chose to pursue my studies there so that I can connect the lessons back home.”

Kahari was offered a Merit scholarship by Baylor University which covers 40% of her cost of attendance, including meals. The remaining 60% is approximately US$40 000 per year.

Kahari has created a Go Fund Me campaign with the help of her mentor, Jennifer Jones to make her dream come true.

“This is an opportunity for me to bring back the knowledge that I would have attained from practising science within the US and some of the research opportunities that I will have during my studies,” she said.

“I have noticed that there is a wide gap in science education within Africa... I want to stand a chance to popularise science among young people which is also my goal to teach young people so that they can fall in love with it.”

She said her aim was to help people suffering from diseases to get solutions through biomedical research.

Currently, Kahari is participating in an elite programme for young change-makers with Global Citizen Year in Cape Town, South Africa. She also works as a teaching assistant for a private school where she teaches biology and chemistry.
