ED mourns Geingob

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has sent a condolence message to the people of Namibia following President Hage Geingob’s death yesterday.

Geingob died at the age of 82, less than three weeks after the announceme­nt that he was undergoing cancer treatment.

Mnangagwa said the region had lost a liberation stalwart and an icon.

“We in Zimbabwe fondly remember President Geingob as a pan-Africanist, a liberation hero and a visionary statesman who served his people with utmost distinctio­n,” Mnangagwa said.

He applauded the role Geingob played in maintainin­g cordial relations between Zimbabwe and Namibia.

“President Geingob bequeaths to posterity an invaluable legacy which we must preserve and hand down to successive young generation­s, particular­ly his tenacious commitment to freedom, justice, African dignity, solidarity and mutual tolerance,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mnangagwa is today expected to meet with Botswana president Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi for the 4th Session of the two countries' Bi-National Commission.

According to a statement issued by Botswana's ministry of foreign affairs, the engagement will end on February 9 when the Heads of State Session will be held.

On the agenda will be agricultur­e; mining; security; trade and investment; tourism just to mention a few.

“The BNC is a key bilateral mechanism that facilitate­s co-operation between Botswana and Zimbabwe in areas such as, agricultur­e; mining; security; trade and investment; tourism; immigratio­n and transport."

“Accordingl­y, the 4th Session of the Botswana-Zimbabwe BNC, will afford the two leaders an opportunit­y to review progress on the implementa­tion of bilateral co-operation commitment­s, as well as, explore ways of broadening the scope of collaborat­ion between the two countries and people,” the statement said.

Botswana and Zimbabwe enjoy a strong friendship and excellent bilateral relations which are founded on shared historical, socio-economic and cultural ties.

The two countries establishe­d diplomatic ties in 1983.
