UP-AND-COMING golfer David Amm shot a 3-under par final to bag his first professional title at the Tongaat Hulett Lowveld Pro-Am at Triangle Country Club yesterday.

Amm carded 69 on the first day and was one stroke behind first round leader, Zambian Sydney Wemba before an impressive 65 on day two, before a final round 69 to finish the tournament on 13-under to take the US$10 000 winner’s cheque.

Pride Sembo, who led the field after two rounds, closed the tournament with a 1-under score to settle for second place on 12-under in a two-horse race championship.

On Saturday, the Royal Harare golfer played some brilliant golf at Hippo Valley Golf club where the second round was held, shooting an impressive round of 64 to assume the lead.

But he failed to shrug off a spirited challenge from Amm, who managed seven birdies and three bogeys on the final day for the win.

Sembo walked away US$5 000 richer for finishing as the runnerup.

First round leader Wemba, who began the tournament with a 4-under par score, lost his lead on the second day after carding 70 before completing the tournament with a level par score for a 6-under par third place total.

Veteran professional golfer Tongoona Charamba carded 73, 69 and 69 to finish the tournament on 5-under in fourth place, while Visitor Mapwanya was one stroke behind in fifth place.

Amm was thrilled to win his first tournament since he turned professional late last year.

“It feels great to win this tournament. It’s always nice to have a chance to win a golf tournament, but this one is special because it’s my first win as a pro and that was playing on mind. It made the nerves pretty tingly and that was special,” he said after his win.

“When I play a tournament, I always try to win. However, golf is a unique sport whereby the winning percentage is very low, so you are always trying to play your best and when it pays, it’s a good feeling he added,” Amm added.

At least 58 professional golfers took part in the event, which was making a return after almost a 10year hiatus.

It attracted golfers from South Africa, Zambia, Malawi, Portugal and the United Kingdom.

Triangle Limited and Hippo Valley Estates co-hosted the event, which attracted sponsors ZB Bank — the major sponsors, Cimas, ETG World, NatPak, Nyaradzo, Old Mutual, Doves, Delta Beverages, Econet, EcoCash, Minerva, National Building Society and Zuva Petroleum.
