Bayern ‘can only go as far as Kane’ in UEFA: Hargreaves

BAYERN Munich have a “brilliant” squad to choose from, but can “only go as far as Harry Kane” in the UEFA Champions League this season, says Owen Hargreaves.

The England captain scored twice in a 3-0 win over Lazio on Tuesday night to secure his side’s passage to the quarter-finals with a 3-1 aggregate victory.

That took his tally for the season to 33 goals, continuing an incredible debut campaign following his summer move from Tottenham Hotspur.

Former Bayern midfielder Hargreaves underlined just how important the striker is to his team’s European aspirations.

“Kane and [fellow goalscorer] Thomas Muller, they’re the guys you need in big moments,” said Hargreaves.

“Bayern need Kane to step up, they can only go as far as Harry Kane. If you think of all the firepower they have: [Kingsley] Coman still to come back, [Serge] Gnabry, Alphonso Davies was back fit, can Kim [Min-jae] come back, [Dayot] Upamecano … Bayern have a brilliant starting eleven, but they can only go as far as Harry Kane. So far this season he has been absolutely amazing.”

Kane’s double at the Allianz Arena made him the first British player to exceed the 50-goal mark in European competitions as he took his tally to 51 overall.

That extended his lead over Steven Gerrard (41) and Wayne Rooney (40) in the all-time list, but Rio Ferdinand believes the 30-year-old has other things on his mind.

“Three great names of British football,” Ferdinand said of the list.

“But he’s going to have a lot more once he finishes, I’m sure. I don’t think he’ll be too focused on that right now, he’s thinking of trying to get some silverware.

“That’s why he’s gone to Germany, that’s why he’s gone to Bayern Munich. This is his last real opportunity.”
