War veterans pin hope on new minister

- BY BRENT SHAMU

LIBERATION war fighters have pinned their hope on the newlyappointed Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs minister Monica Mavhunga saying they have high expectations that their grievances will be addressed.

Mavhunga assumed the post following the sacking of Christopher Mutsvangwa.

In a statement, the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) secretarygeneral Edward Dube said they hoped the new minister would deal with their overdue issue of poor remuneration.

“The ZNLWVA looks forward to engaging in constructive dialogue and partnership with the honourable minister to ensure the effective implementation of programmes and initiatives that support the welfare and advancement of veterans of the liberation struggle,” Dube said.

“We are pleased to note that Honourable Mavhunga has previously served as an executive member of the association, providing her with a deep understanding of the challenges faced by war veterans in terms of economic and social deprivation. This first-hand experience positions her well to address the needs and aspirations of the war veteran constituency.”

The war veterans said they were ready to collaborate with the government in a bid to have several challenges faced by war veterans addressed.

“The ZNLWVA expresses its full commitment to collaborating with the honourable minister to achieve the objectives outlined in the constitutional and statutory provisions. We believe that by working together, we can address the various challenges faced by war veterans, including socio-economic empowerment, healthcare, housing and access to educational opportunities,” Dube said.

Meanwhile, war veterans have expressed disgruntlement over failure by the government to pay tuition fees for their children for the past year.
