Ntabeni win Lou Corbi Rugby Festival

NTABENI Primary School of Entumbane clinched the 25th title in 35 years as they continued their successive run in the Lou Corbi Under-12 Rugby festival when they were crowned 2016 champions after overpoweri­ng Harare-based Hatcliff 5-0 at Hartsfield Rugby Grounds yesterday.

Over 30 primary schools including Zulukandab­a, Lobengula, Mgoqo, Tategulu, Milton Junior, Mpumelelo, Mgiqika, Dingumuzi (Plumtree), Queen Elizabeth (Harare), Hatcliff (Harare) and Emakhanden­i took part in the 35th edition of the ever growing tournament.

Businessma­n Lou Corbi, who’s the founder of the tournament, said the event was meant for interactio­n and fun among youngsters.

“The main reason of this tourney is to give youngsters a chance to meet new people and socialise with other children from different parts of the country. It also gives them a chance to shine and represent their school, the tournament is growing bigger over the years” said Corbi.

Corbi also gave credit to the schools and organisers and schools who came in their numbers to grace the occasion for their support for the past 35 years. He also heaped praised to the introducti­on of the girls in the tournament.

In an interview, Ntabeni coach, Mbongeni Ndlovu said hard work is their secret ingredient in being the most successful team in the tournament.

“The school has won this tournament more than other schools that have participat­ed, this is because we are practising hard to achieve our goals.

“We also groom the team at a younger age so that they gain strength and experience,” said Ndlovu.

The event was sponsored by the Harare-based Glass Creations who supplied the event with trophies and individual awards.

Meanwhile, Hatcliff ran riot over Nkulumane located Sigombe 15-0 to claim victory in the girls category.

In the main match of the day, Mbare Academy Under-21s hammered their Matabelela­nd counterpar­ts 42-0.
