Artistes pen song for cancer

- Nkosilesisa Ncube Sunday Life Reporter

IT is a growing norm to address serious social issues through the arts and Fish F McSwagg’s recent single, Neria is no different, as the song takes a bold stance against breast cancer.

The song is a special dedication to those suffering from the disease and it seeks to lift up their spirits and make the African community aware of the pain cancer can cause to all.

Neria is a single that encourages women living with breast cancer not to lose hope in spite of the seemingly impossible situation that they may find themselves in and from the opening line of the song “Nyangwe zvinhu zvikaoma , usawore moyo” (No matter how hard things get, do not lose heart), the song already gives listeners a sense of hope that perhaps things will get better.

The opening verse, led by Fish McSwagg tells the story of a woman who has been diagnosed with cancer and is trying to help her son come to terms with her illness. She highlights that her condition is not a result of anyone’s doing (as in most African setups if one gets an illness that is severe, it is usually attributed to witchcraft). She tells her son to help tell everyone he knows about the disease in an effort to fight against it.

The chorus made up of strong vocals, refers to every woman dealing with breast cancer, either directly or indirectly as Neria. Neria is the symbol of strength, patience, endurance and perseverance among Zimbabwean women. The song encourages women to be as strong and enduring as there is light at the end of the tunnel.

The second verse comprises Benny Jones’ rap talking of how many people have lost their lives to cancer and also how many people’s lives have been turned upside down in the face of breast cancer.

Overall, the song is a feel good tune that could help lift up the spirits of those who have dealt with the disease and those currently faced with the illness.
