Colour plays an important role in the kitchen

- Amanda Ncube

SOME say life may be created in the bedroom, but it is certainly lived in the kitchen. A kitchen is the heart of the house which defines the owners of the house hence a lot should be taken into considerat i on from colour to furniture.

W h e n decorating your kitchen whether small or large, colour plays an important role, especially if you paint the room in a pleasurable manner that gives the impression of spaciousness.

For a bold and unexpected design touch avoid using colours such as white, consider painting an accent wall in a vibrant shade such as cream.

An eye catching wall adds depth and style, and it will even highlight architectural elements particular to your room. Choosing curtains with colour and pattern can also add a dramatic look to your room.

Take advantage of unused space, like a bare wall, or an empty window sill to add decor sparingly. Uniformity also produces simplicity for example grouping similar items. For instance, create visual continuity by pairing like items such as a collection of decorative plates, a set of storage baskets or a grouping of photos in co-ordinating black frames.

During the decorating process, remember to look up and assess your lighting situation. Although recessed and under-cabinet lights leave the smallest footprint in a small kitchen, a pair of pendant lamps above the centre island or a trendy drum shadesh above the built-inb breakfast nookn will give theth kitchen a finishedfi look.

Eve r y t h i ng in a small kitchen must serve doubleduty, so shelves aren’t just for stW storing dishes. With proper st styling, floating sh shelves or glassfront fr cabinets are easily t r ans forme d into paintings for treasures or a stack of cookbooks. If storage space is limited, then bring in a freestanding cabinet like a bookshelf or a baker’s rack to hold your kitchen essential. —Additional information from Online sources.
