Making your bedroom feel warm and cosy this winter

- Amanda Ncube

BEDROOMS are the most neglected space during winter. People are more concerned about having enough blankets to keep themselves warm — they just select items not considering how their space is going to look. Preparing your bedroom for winter can create a perfect sanctuary which will keep you warm. This winter let us not neglect or bedrooms, let us worry about keeping our bedrooms cosy and warm at the same time.

You can create a winter space by simple adding a throw to your bed. I know it can be very cold at times, you can put as many blankets as you deem necessary under the bedspread and place a throw on top of it but make sure that it looks neat. Layering the bed with extra comforters and blankets to make your space feel and look cosy. These days there are elegant throws that you can use and these include fur throws — to add texture to an already existing bedspread. Not only are these throws stylish, they are warm, which makes them perfect for winter season.

Window treatments are very important in blocking out chilly winter drafts. Curtains also play a pivotal role in making your bedroom feel warm, heavy curtains are not only important to keep heat in, they also create a warmer look. Installing blackout curtains is a perfect way to get a good night’s sleep and also keep warmth in your bedroom during winter.

Lighting creates ambiance in a room. Experimenting with different lighting can create the perfect atmosphere to get cosy and enjoy the winter months. Adding simple lighting to your headboard can make a great reading spot so you don’t even need to leave your bed.

Although some types of floors create a sophisticated style statement year-round, you’ll need to cosy them up for the winter season. A fluffy area rug sets off the bedroom and adds warmth and texture underfoot. For a unique style statement, layer one rug on top of another to add more visual interest. Make an existing rug even cosier by layering a thinner, smaller rug on top of it.
