Streak on Chigumbura omission

- Mehluli Sibanda Senior Sports Reporter

NATIONAL cricket team coach, Heath Streak is of the view that all rounder Elton Chigumbura still has something to offer in the global game despite his omission from the One Day International squad to play Scotland, Netherlands and Sri Lanka.

Chigumbura was a notable big name player left out of the 15-men squad for the ODIs which was released by ZC last Friday. Streak believes the 31-year-old needs to get back to form in order to be get looked at for selection.

“Elton’s early domestic season has been poor and he has hardly bowled of late. He is averaging 18 in six innings of Logan Cup, he has hardly bowled an over. He is very capable he just needs to find some form,’’ Streak said.

On what he wants to achieve in the ODIs against Scotland, Netherlands and Sri Lanka, Streak expressed his desire to give enough game time to players who are likely to be part of next year’s 2019 Cricket World Cup qualifiers which Zimbabwe have shown an interest in hosting.

“We want to give exposure to guys who will play in the Cricket World Cup qualifiers. Obviously, we will try to win away from home,’’ said Streak.

Zimbabwe head off to Scotland on 11 June where they will play two ODIs on 15 and 17 June. From there, they head off to Netherlands for three 50 over matches then Sri Lanka for five ODIs and one Test. @Mdawini_29
