- Ngqwele Dube Sports Correspondent

MORE than 30 karatekas had the opportunity to undergo a training session under instruction from Shito-Ryu world chief instructor, Shihan (Master) Keiji Tomiyama at Raylton Sports Club yesterday afternoon.

Shito-Ryu Karate is one of the top four karate styles in Japan. Shito-Ryu Karate’s local publicity officer, Samson Bhuza said the sessions will update students of the style on the latest worldwide trends. He said as with other sports new trends emerge and it was critical that local karatekas are not left behind.

“Tomiyama’s visit is part of his annual programme which sees him travel to all countries in the world where the style is practiced. The event is being attended by all local students and instructors of the style. His visit is critical to the local game because most of us do not have the funds to travel to Japan so whenever he comes, we all take the opportunity to keep ourselves abreast of new developments,” said Bhuza.

The training will ensure that local students and instructors have access and conform to standard international skills without having to bear prohibitive travelling costs outside the country. During his six-day visit, which started on Friday, To m i y a m a has conducted extensive training sessions at the style’s Bulawayo dojos (training places) of Parkview Sports Club, Raylton Recreation Club and will also be heading to St. Thomas Aquinas Primary School. Tomiyama will also hold a grading session for senior karateka during his stay.

Bhuza said the itinerary will be concluded on Wednesday evening with an open session where all karatekas in the province irrespective would be allowed to attend. Other than its affiliation to the international mother body, Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Zimbabwe is also affiliated to the Bulawayo Metropolitan Karate Association and Zimbabwe Karate Union.
