Anti-poaching unit scout becomes gospel singer

- Samantha Dube Sunday Life Reporter

A 26-YEAR-OLD Victoria Falls-based anti-poaching unit scout has released a gospel compilation titled Alpha and Omega.

Billy Elroy founded the Royal Psalms in 2009 and started composing songs as well as participating in church competitions. Members of the Royal Psalms had the zeal to go far with the music but because of financial challenges they ended up splitting in 2013. Elroy started again with new members, though most of the time he was occupied with work, it did not hinder him from exploring his talent in music.

“Coming from a struggling family helped me to realise that I have the responsibility to cater for my siblings and was prepared to go an extra mile. Some of the members of the initial group had different expectations and when things did not go smoothly from the beginning, they developed cold feet, but I had to soldier on and recruit new members, leading to the new album,” he said.

Their first album as Royal Psalms was in 2015, titled Jehovah Able which, however, was only a hit in local Victoria Falls.

“I spend most of my time in the bush and when I relax I compose music and gospel is my calling, though some people might expect me to be interested in rough and more rigorous sounds because of the nature of my job. Regardless of the occupation one can be in, it is possible to discover talent as well as ambition. Challenges may rise but one must be strong and hold on to their dreams because one day it shall be well. People may look down upon your works but don’t let it be a barrier, put God first.”

Other songs in the compilation are Rejoice, Yoweh and Manya manya. Remember now,
