Minimalist interior design approach for your home

- AmandaA N Ncube

WHETHERW you are designing your new place or revamping your home, the layout of your items is important. With the current cash shortages, shopping for furniture or any other item for your home décor is limited. Minimalism is the way to go as it only requires a pared-down element. It is more important t to have a few quality items than a ton of junk. A few style-defining pieces speak much louder than lots of little tchotchkes (a small object that is decorative rather than strictly functional.)

Some people find the minimalist approach style l liberating; most of the pieces are appreciated in all of t the glorious simplicity.

This week’s column will highlight ways of achieving a chic minimalist look that is friendly to your lifestyle and your pocket.

Choosing a high-quality and beautiful single stand-out piece that will stand out . . . a couch or a t table which will draw people’s attention. Select a stand-out piece which will complement other colours w when paired together. For example a table with a red shade paired with grey chairs has all the impact in the room. It can be tempting to pile the table with a tablecloth and a centre piece . . . yet sometimes clean or empty surfaces can be equally enticing.

Adding an area rug also heightens the look of your home, it provides plenty of colour and pattern in this room. Keeping the other furnishings neutral allows the rug to take centre stage. Do not forget that the objective is being minimal, hence do not over-stuff your space.

Simple and pure items are the right choices to make. Even if a table has many chairs, the shape and colour creates an almost sculptural feel to the collection. For example nowadays there are different dining chairs type, the table may be a simple wood table but the nature of the chairs creates an elegant and sophisticated look.

You can also achieve a minimalist look by giving your items plenty of space. Neutral walls and abundant space allow the spare collection of a beautifully crafted table, simple bowl and intricate sculpture to be fully appreciated. Each piece has some breathing room. This can be done in almost all the rooms. For instance in the living room, one huge couch and two chairs, be it slipper or occasional chairs on the side may work perfectly. The room will feel completely uncluttered and each piece feels appreciated.

For your bedroom, your bed does not need to be exhausted with pillows. Instead two colourful pillows will spruce up the look of the entire room. Placed along with a white bedspread and clean lines of the platform bed, they give a feeling of tranquillity. This would be a great bedroom for letting your mind clear at the end of the day. The texture of a bedspread and a throw brings calmness, warmth and elegance. They complement each other beautifully.
