A 56-YEAR-OLD Victoria Falls man who raped his 10-year-old neighbour before buying her silence with 10 cents has been jailed for 14 years. Charles Ncube of Mkhosana pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Hwange regional magistrate, Mr Collet Ncube last week.

He was, however, sentenced to 17 years imprisonment of which three were conditionally suspended.

Ncube, through his lawyer Mr Givemore Muvhiringi argued he did not rape the girl but was playing with her as he usually does with other children.

“Your worship, I did not rape the complainant as alleged by the State but I was playing with her. Yes, I admit that I gave the complainant some money to buy some snacks but I did not rape her,” he said.

The court heard that on 13 March at about 5pm, Ncube was at his place of residence relaxing when the girl and her younger sister aged six entered into his house and found him lying on his bed alone.

He rose up and offered the two girls 10 cents before they left to buy snacks and returned to the house.

When they finished eating the snacks Ncube again gave the girl 25 cents but ordered her younger sister to go and buy while he remained alone with the 10-year-old. He then pulled her to his bed before raping her once. During the act, the girl’s brother stormed into the room without knocking and saw the two sleeping together on the bed.

After noticing that he had been seen Ncube released the girl and pretended to have been playing with her.

She got up and picked her underwear which was on the floor before bolting out with her brother. The brother went home and reported what he had seen to his mother who in turn informed the police leading to Ncube’s arrest.

She was referred to Victoria Falls Hospital for medical examination and a report was compiled and produced in court as evidence. Mr Tinomupeyi Mbiza appeared for the State.
